From September 8th to 11th, the Making it Work (MIW) team will be participating in the AWID Forum 2016, an international gathering of broad movements and sectors revolving around gender and feminism themes. The topic this year is “Feminism Futures: Building Collective Power for Rights and Justice”, and the topics of gender and disability will be discussed – more specifically, gender-based violence.
This will be an outstanding opportunity to exchange knowledge about the latest gains and gaps for the rights of women and traditionally marginalized populations, to discuss the current situation of these groups in different regions of the world, and to share ideas about the best strategies to implement in order to overcome the remaining challenges.
On Friday, Sept. 9th, the MIW team will be organizing a panel titled “Strengthening our Collective Power: Engaging women and girls with disabilities to end violence against all women and girls”. It will bring together women with disabilities and their allies from different countries to talk about successful violence prevention initiatives that are inclusive of women and girls with disabilities. It will explore lessons learned on violence prevention and open a discussion on ways forward on collective action to eliminate and prevent violence against all women.
During the panel, Rehema Namarome (United Deaf Women's Organisation), Yeni Rosa Damayanti (Perhimpunan Jiwa Sehat/Indonesian Mental Health Association) Soinette Désir (Union des Femmes à Mobilité Réduite d’Haïti) and Naomi Navoce (Pacific Disability Forum) will share their insights on gender and disability. Additionally, presentations will be led by country-level advocates, whose practices have been identified during the previous phase of Making It Work: Fatma Haji Wangare (Kenyan Association of Intellectually Handicapped), Priscila Rodriguez (DRI) and Natalia Santos Estrada (Collectivo Chucan).
If you are attending the Forum, you are invited to join this interactive conversation on ending violence against women with disabilities.
If you are not attending the conference, stay tuned as we will be reporting live from the Forum, using Twitter and Facebook and we will be excited to hear your reactions.
